Elk County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Howard . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southeast Kansas, about 25 miles south of Oklahoma , and has an area of ​​1,684 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Greenwood County , Wilson County , Montgomery County , Chautauqua County , Cowley County, and Butler County .

history

Elk County was formed on March 3, 1875 from parts of the defunct Howard County. It was named after the Elk River .
