Norton County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Norton .

The county is located in northwest Kansas, borders Nebraska to the north and has an area of 2,283 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by counties: Phillips County , Graham County , Sheridan County, and Decatur County .

history

Norton County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Orloff Norton , an officer in the American Civil War .

As of the 2000 census , Norton County had 5,953 people in 2,266 households and 1,470 families in Norton County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.35 percent white, 4.05 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.02 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.37 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,266 households, 28.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers, and 35.1 percent were non-families. 32.3 percent of all households were single households and 17.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

22.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 19.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 122.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 122.9 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,050 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,036. Males had a median income of $ 25,983 versus $ 20,381 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,835.
