Osage County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Lyndon .

The county is located in east central Kansas, about 50 miles from Missouri , and has an area of 1,863 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Shawnee County , Douglas County , Franklin County , Coffey County , Lyon County, and Wabaunsee Counties .
history
Osage County was formed on February 11, 1859. It was named after the Osage River .

As of the 2000 census , Osage County had 16,712 people in 6,490 households and 4,737 families in Osage County. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.27 percent white, 0.22 percent African American, 0.65 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.18 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.53 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,490 households, 33.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, and 27.0 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
27.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 93.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,928 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,581. Males had a median income of $ 30,670 versus $ 22,981 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,691.
6.4 percent of families and 8.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
