Barton County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Great Bend .

The county is located near the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of 2332 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Russell County , Ellsworth County , Rice County , Stafford County , Pawnee County, and Rush County .
history
Barton County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Marion County. It was named after Clara Barton , an American nurse, teacher, and philanthropist . She founded the American Red Cross and also had a great influence on the self-image of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement .
A total of 18 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Barton County had 28,205 people in 11,393 households and 7,530 families in Barton County. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.98 percent white, 1.15 percent African American, 0.51 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.6 percent were descended from 2 or more races. 8.31 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,393 households, 31.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers, and 33.9 percent were non-families. 30.2 percent of all households were single households and 14.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.01.
26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 17.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 90.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,176 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,929. Males had a median income of $ 28,803 versus $ 20,428 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,695. 9.9 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
