The county is located in eastern Kansas, bordering Missouri, and has an area of 1,244 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Johnson County was formed in 1855 as the original county from the Kansas Territory that was designated as free - but actually populated by Indians - and is one of the first 33 counties that were formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Reverend Thomas Johnson (1802-1865), a Methodist missionary and member of the administration of the Kansas Territory, who was killed by Confederate partisans in the American Civil War .
A branch of the Santa Fe Trail runs through the county, and Wild Bill Hickok settled here for some time in 1858 .
Johnson County has a National Historic Landmark , the Shawnee Mission . A total of 24 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).
