History

The first small trading post, a trading post , was founded in 1812 under the name Four House and later renamed Tiblow . After further development of the area, the place was given the name "Bonner Springs" in 1885. By 1898, 33 buildings had already been erected. Shortly thereafter, an opera house with a capacity of 600 seats was opened. A local fire brigade was established and the place continued to grow in the 1920s and 1930s due to the industrialization of the region.

In years of unusually heavy rainfall, the Missouri River and the Kansas River swell sharply. This can lead to considerable damage from flooding in the area. Particularly severe floods occurred in 1903, 1951 and 1993.

Today, Bonner Springs is home to the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, as well as the Wyandotte County Museum and Historical Society and the Sandstone Amphitheater , a popular concert building. The city also hosts the Kansas City Renaissance Festival , a popular festival every fall .
