Johannes Bernardus van Bree

Johannes Bernardus van Bree (born January 29, 1801 in Amsterdam ; † February 14, 1857 there ) was a Dutch Romantic composer .

Live and act

At the beginning of the 19th century, Bree was considered one of the most talented musicians in the Netherlands. Van Bree was initially successful as a solo violinist , but later became conductor of Felix Meritis , the 'predecessor' of the Concertgebouw . His music was slightly oriented towards German composers such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Louis Spohr and the lighter French style of Hector Berlioz and François-Adrien Boieldieu . During the Belgian Revolution of 1830 he wrote a series of patriotic songs that earned him the title of ' national composer'.

Van Bree composed numerous masses , cantatas, two operas, two symphonies, four overtures, four string quartets, marches for wind orchestra , piano pieces and many other arrangements.
