Brown County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Hiawatha .

The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Kansas, borders Nebraska to the north and has an area of 1,482 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Doniphan County , Atchison County , Jackson County, and Nemaha County .
history
Brown County was formed as the original Free Territory County on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Albert Gallatin Brown , a US Senator from Mississippi .

As of the 2000 census , Brown County had 10,724 people in 4,318 households and 2,949 families in Brown County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.87 percent white, 1.56 percent African American, 8.82 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.73 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.81 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.32 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,318 households, 31.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.8 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 31.7 percent were non-families. 28.8 percent of all households were single households and 15.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
26.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 24.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 19.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 89.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,971 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,525. Males had a median income of $ 29,163 versus $ 19,829 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,163. 10.6 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
