Trego County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is WaKeeney .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of 2328 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Graham County , Rooks County , Ellis County , Ness County, and Gove County .
history
Trego County was formed in 1879. It was named after Edward P. Trego , a captain of the H Company of the 8th Kansas Infantry Regiment, killed on September 19, 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga .

As of the 2000 census , Trego County had 3,319 people in 1,412 households and 936 families in Trego County. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.77 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.48 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.96 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.78 percent of the population.
Of the 1,412 households, 27.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers, and 33.7 percent were non-families. 31.4 percent of all households were single households and 17.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 24.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 87.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 29,677 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,524. Males had a median income of $ 26,545 versus $ 16,927 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,239.
