Jefferson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Oskaloosa .

The county is located in northeast Kansas, about 70 km to the north from Nebraska , about 15 km to the northeast from Missouri , and has an area of ​​1,442 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Atchison County , Leavenworth County , Douglas County , Shawnee County, and Jackson County .

history

Jefferson County was formed on August 25, 1855 as the original county from the Kansas Territory and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third US president .

Jefferson County's population was 18,426 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 259 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,830 households and 5,190 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer.
