Jefferson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Oskaloosa .

The county is located in northeast Kansas, about 70 km to the north from Nebraska , about 15 km to the northeast from Missouri , and has an area of 1,442 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Atchison County , Leavenworth County , Douglas County , Shawnee County, and Jackson County .

Jefferson County was formed on August 25, 1855 as the original county from the Kansas Territory and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third US president .

Jefferson County's population was 18,426 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 259 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,830 households and 5,190 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.70 percent white, 0.37 percent African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.28 percent of the population.

Of the 6,830 households, 35.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 65.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers, and 24.0 percent were non-families. 20.1 percent of all households were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.07.

27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,535 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,557. Males had a median income of $ 36,174 versus $ 25,468 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,373. 5.3 percent of families and 6.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
