Jackson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Holton .

The county is located in northeast Kansas, about 25 miles north of Nebraska , about 50 km to the east from Missouri , and has an area of 1,704 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Brown County , Atchison County , Jefferson County , Shawnee County , Pottawatomie County, and Nemaha County .

Jackson County was formed on February 11, 1859. It was named after Andrew Jackson , the seventh US president .

As of the 2000 census , Jackson County had 12,657 people in 4,727 households and 3,507 families in Jackson County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.21 percent white, 0.53 percent African American, 6.84 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.49 percent of the population.
Of the 4,727 households, 35.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers, and 25.8 percent were non-families. 22.7 percent of all households were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09 people.
28.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 93.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 40,451 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,520. Males had a median income of $ 32,195 versus $ 22,305 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,606.
