The county is located in southeast Kansas, borders Oklahoma to the south , is 80 km to the east from Missouri and has an area of ​​1,687 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wilson County , Neosho County , Labette County , Chautauqua County, and Elk Counties .

history

Montgomery County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Richard Montgomery , an Irish-American major general in the Continental Army during the American War of Independence , who died trying to capture Québec in Canada in 1775 after taking two forts and the city of Montreal . Five cities, 15 counties, a warship and a college were named after him.

Montgomery County's population was 36,252 as of the 2000 census . 900 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 14,903 households and 9955 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.77 percent white, 6.07 percent African American, 3.19 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.34 percent were descended from two or more races.
