Clay County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Clay Center . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Kansas, is about 25 miles north of Nebraska and has an area of ​​1,698 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Washington County , Riley County , Geary County , Dickinson County , Ottawa County, and Cloud County .

Henry Clay

Clay County was formed as the original Free Territory county on March 20, 1857. It was named after Henry Clay , a US politician, member of the House of Representatives , the Senate , Secretary of State , multiple presidential candidate and opponent of slavery .

With the Republican River flowing through the county from northwest to southwest, bridge building played an important role in the county's history. The first bridge was built in 1875 near Clay Center, the second in 1880 near Vining. Other bridges at Wakefield, Morganville, and Broughton followed. The first school was established near Lincoln Creek in 1864. The first church was built in Clay Center in 1868.

4 of the county's structures and sites are on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Clay County had 8,822 people in 3,617 households and 2,517 families in Clay County. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.72 percent white, 0.57 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from 2 or more races.
