Sumner County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Wellington .

The county is located in southeast Kansas, borders Oklahoma to the south and has an area of 3,069 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sedgwick County , Butler County , Cowley County , Harper County, and Kingman Counties .
history
Sumner County was formed in 1873. It was named after Charles Sumner , an opponent of slavery and a US Senator for Massachusetts . In 1887, Susanna Madora Salter was elected mayor of Argonia , the first woman to hold this post in the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Sumner County had 25,946 people. Of these, 408 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 9888 households and 7089 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.62 percent white, 0.71 percent African American, 1.05 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.06 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.58 percent of the population.
Of the 9,888 households, 34.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, and 28.3 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.10 people.
28.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 15.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,415 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,739. Males had a median income of $ 36,616 versus $ 23,020 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,305. 7.2 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
