Ellsworth County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Ellsworth .
geography
The county is located near the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of 1,874 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lincoln County , Saline County , McPherson County , Rice County , Barton County, and Russell Counties . Mushroom Rock State Park and Kanopolis State Park are in the county .
history
Ellsworth County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Marion County and Free Territory. It was named after Fort Ellsworth , which was named after Allen Ellsworth, 2nd Lieutenant of the 7th Iowa Cavalry .

As of the 2000 census , Ellsworth County had 6,525 people in 2,481 households and 1,639 families in Ellsworth County. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.67 percent white, 3.56 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.86 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.18 percent were descended from 2 or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.59 percent of the population.
Of the 2,481 households, 27.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.2 percent were married couples living together, 6.2 percent were single mothers, and 33.9 percent were non-families. 31.4 percent of all households were single households and 17.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
21.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 20.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 111.9 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over, there were 114.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,772 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,360. Males had a median income of $ 30,110 versus $ 20,486 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,569. 4.0 percent of families and 7.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
