Chautauqua County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Sedan . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southeast Kansas, borders Oklahoma to the south and has an area of ​​1,670 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Elk County , Montgomery County, and Cowley Counties .

history

Chautauqua County was formed on March 25, 1875 from parts of the defunct Howard County. It was named after Chautauqua County in New York , the former home of the first settlers, the first of whom arrived here in July 1868. At the time the county was formed, 7,400 people lived here.
