Chautauqua County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Sedan . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southeast Kansas, borders Oklahoma to the south and has an area of 1,670 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Elk County , Montgomery County, and Cowley Counties .
history
Chautauqua County was formed on March 25, 1875 from parts of the defunct Howard County. It was named after Chautauqua County in New York , the former home of the first settlers, the first of whom arrived here in July 1868. At the time the county was formed, 7,400 people lived here.

According to the 2000 census , Chautauqua County's population was 4,359. 154 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,796 households and 1,235 families in Chautauqua County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.8 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 3.6 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, 0.1 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.3 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.8 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.4 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,796 households, 26.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers, and 31.2 percent were non-families. 29.4 percent of all households were single households and 16.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 20.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 24.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 91.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,717 , and the median income for a family was $ 33,871. Males had a median income of $ 25,083 versus $ 21,346 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,280. 9.0 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
