The Kearny County is a county in the state of Kansas of the United States . The county seat is Lakin .

The county is located in western Kansas, about 50 km to the west from Colorado , to the south about 80 km from Oklahoma , and covers an area of ​​2,257 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wichita County , Scott County , Finney County , Haskell County , Grant County , Stanton County, and Hamilton County .

history

The Kearny County was formed on March 6, 1873 from parts of Finney County. It was named after Philip Kearny , a US Army officer in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War that fell at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862 .

Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

Kearny County had a population of 4,531 people as of the 2000 census . 45 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,542 households and 1,199 families.
