The Kearny County is a county in the state of Kansas of the United States . The county seat is Lakin .

The county is located in western Kansas, about 50 km to the west from Colorado , to the south about 80 km from Oklahoma , and covers an area of 2,257 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wichita County , Scott County , Finney County , Haskell County , Grant County , Stanton County, and Hamilton County .

history

The Kearny County was formed on March 6, 1873 from parts of Finney County. It was named after Philip Kearny , a US Army officer in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War that fell at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862 .

Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

Kearny County had a population of 4,531 people as of the 2000 census . 45 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,542 households and 1,199 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.3 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.9 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian, 0.1 percent from the Pacific island area and 15.7 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.1 percent were descended from 2 or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 26.6 percent of the population.

Of the 1,542 households, 43.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 65.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, and 22.2 percent were non-families. 20.2 percent of all households were single households and 8.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.35 people.

34.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 11.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 104.7 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 98.5 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 40,149 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,703. Males had a median income of $ 30,117 versus $ 20,179 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,708. 8.4 percent of families and 11.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
