Marion County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Marion .

The county is east of the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of 2,470 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dickinson County , Morris County , Chase County , Butler County , Harvey County , McPherson County, and Saline Counties .
history
Marion County was formed on August 30, 1855 as the original county from parts of the Kansas Territory and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Francis Marion , also known as Swamp Fox , a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia during the American Civil War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 13,361 people in 5114 households and 3,687 families in Marion County. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.06 percent white, 0.47 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.92 percent of the population.
Of the 5114 households, 30.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.8 percent were married couples living together, 5.5 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent of all households were single households and 14.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.94.
24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 21.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 92.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,500 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,386. Males had a median income of $ 30,236 versus $ 21,119 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,100.
4.8 percent of families and 8.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
