Gove County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Gove City . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in central northwest Kansas and covers an area of 2,775 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sheridan County , Graham County , Trego County , Ness County , Scott County , Logan County, and Thomas County .

Gove County was formed as the original Free Territory County on March 2, 1868. It was named after Grenville L. Gove , an officer in the American Civil War .

As of the 2000 census , Gove County had 3,068 people in 1,245 households and 861 families in Gove County. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.95 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.72 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.98 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.24 percent of the population.
Of the 1,245 households, 28.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.5 percent were married couples living together, 3.5 percent were single mothers, and 30.8 percent were non-families. 29.7 percent of all households were single households and 17.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01.
26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 22.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 92.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,510 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,438. Males had a median income of $ 26,863 versus $ 21,357 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,852.
