Ness County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Ness City .

The county is located in west central Kansas and covers an area of 2,784 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Trego County , Ellis County , Rush County , Pawnee County , Hodgeman County , Finney County , Lane County, and Gove County .

Ness County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Noah V. Ness , an officer in the American Civil War .

As of the 2000 census , Ness County had a population of 3,454 people. 79 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1516 households and 977 families in Ness County. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.2 percent white, 0.01 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.5 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.5 percent of the population.
Of the 1,516 households, 26.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.1 percent were married couples living together, 4.7 percent were single mothers, and 35.5 percent were non-families. 33.5 percent of all households were single households and 18.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 24.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 95.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,340 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,775. Males had a median income of $ 27,892 versus $ 20,037 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,787. 6.5 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
