Cowley County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Winfield .

The county is located in southeast Kansas, borders Oklahoma to the south and has an area of ​​2933 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by counties in Kansas: Butler County , Elk Counties , Chautauqua Counties , Sumner Counties , and Sedgwick Counties .

history

Cowley County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Butler County. It was named after Matthew Cowley , an important figure in the American Civil War .
