Arkansas City is a city in Cowley County in the US state of Kansas .
geography
Arkansas City is located in southwest Cowley County and covers an area of approximately 24.29 km². The city is mainly located between the Arkansas River , which borders the city to the south, and the Walnut River . A small part of Arkansas City lies east of the Walnut River.
The two US Highways 77 and 166 run through the city or intersect there.
The Parkerfield parish is bordered by Arkansas City to the east. The next largest city is County Seat Winfield .
history
The city was surveyed in 1870. In the same year a newspaper and a department store opened. Shortly afterwards, a post office, a school and a sawmill started operations. In 1872 the city was appointed and the Santa Fe Railway extended the northern railway line on December 3, 1879. The city had its own waterworks in 1889. A pump diverted the water from the spring to a reservoir on a hill in the southern part of the city City.
Demographics
In 2014 Arkansas City was home to 12,205 people. This makes it next to Winfield the most populous city in Cowley County. Since 2000, a population increase of 2 percent has been recorded. On the list of most populous cities in Kansas , Arkansas City ranks number 29.
