Butler County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is El Dorado .

The county is located in southeastern Kansas, about 50 km south of Oklahoma , and has an area of ​​3746 square kilometers, of which 48 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Chase County , Greenwood County , Elk County , Cowley County , Sumner County , Harvey County , Sedgwick County, and Marion County .

Butler County was formed as the original Free Territory county on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Andrew Butler , a US Senator from South Carolina .

According to the 2000 census , Butler County had 59,482 people in 21,527 households and 16,059 families in Butler County. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.94 percent white, 1.38 percent African American, 0.91 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.25 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
