Augusta is a small town in the US state of Kansas , more precisely in Butler County , at the confluence of the two rivers Walnut River and Whitewater River . The last census in 2010 showed 9274 inhabitants. The next largest city is Wichita with approx. 350,000 inhabitants, 40 km west of Augusta.
The city covers an area of 11.4 km², of which 1.0 km² is water. Augusta lies at an average of 390 m above sea level.
The place was named after Augusta James, the wife of CN James, who set up a trading post at this point.
Demographics
The 8,423 inhabitants of Augusta determined in the 2000 census lived in 3,277 households; including 2307 families. The population density was 807 per km². 3585 residential units were recorded in the village. Among the population were 96.1% White, 0.2% African American, 0.8% American Indian, 0.4% Asian, and 0.7% from other races; 1.9% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.
Of the 3,277 households, 35.7% had children under the age of 18; 26.3% were single households. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.06.
The population was divided into 28.0% under 18 years of age, 8.9% from 18 to 24 years of age, 27.9% from 25 to 44 years of age, 19.4% from 45 to 64 years of age and 15.7% from 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years.
