Brown County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Hiawatha .

The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Kansas, borders Nebraska to the north and has an area of ​​1,482 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Doniphan County , Atchison County , Jackson County, and Nemaha County .

history

Brown County was formed as the original Free Territory County on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Albert Gallatin Brown , a US Senator from Mississippi .

As of the 2000 census , Brown County had 10,724 people in 4,318 households and 2,949 families in Brown County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer.
