Dickinson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States of America . The county seat is Abilene .

The county is located in northeast Kansas and has an area of 2207 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Clay County , Morris County , Geary County , Marion County , McPherson County , Saline County, and Ottawa County .
history
Dickinson County was formed on February 20, 1857 from parts of the defunct Davis County and Free Territory. It was named after Daniel Stevens Dickinson , a US Senator from New York .
Dickinson County has a National Historic Landmark , the Parker Carousel . A total of 41 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Dickinson County had 19,344 people. Of these, 338 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7903 households and 5421 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.44 percent white, 0.58 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.82 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30 percent of the population.
Of the 7,903 households, 31.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 31.4 percent were non-families. 28.1 percent of all households were single households and 14.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.94.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 18.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 91.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,975 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,952. Males had a median income of $ 30,889 versus $ 18,526 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,780. 5.3 percent of families and 7.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
