Doniphan County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Troy . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in the extreme northeast of Kansas, borders Missouri to the east and Nebraska to the north , the border to both being formed by the Missouri River and has an area of 1,028 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Atchison County and Brown Counties .
history
Doniphan County was formed as the original free territory county on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first territorial administration. From September 18 of the same year it had its own administration. It was named after Alexander W. Doniphan , who played an important role in the Mexican-American War .
37 structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .
Worth seeing
- The Native American Heritage Museum , 2 miles east of Highland, is an original Presbyterian mission from 1845, where Indian children from Iowa and Missouri were taught.
- The Nelson Rodgers House in Troy, built in 1856
- The Four-state Lookout in White Cloud is a viewing platform with a view over the Missouri, across to the states of Missouri and Nebraska and, in good weather, as far as Iowa.
- The townsite of Old Doniphan . This is where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped on July 4, 1804.

According to the 2000 census , Doniphan County had 8,249 people in 3,173 households and 2,183 families in Doniphan County. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.85 percent white, 2.00 percent African American, 1.21 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.29 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.16 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,173 households, 32.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, and 31.2 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent of all households were single households and 14.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 16.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 96.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,537 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,357. Males had a median income of $ 28,096 versus $ 19,721 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,849. 9.0 percent of families and 11.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
