The Lewis and Clark Expedition also migrated along the eastern borders of the later county in 1804 and spent some time here exploring the banks of the Missouri River.

In 1833 the Methodist Episcopal Church built a mission station in the area.

In July 1854, the town of Atchison, named after David R. Atchison, was founded by settlers. Atchison was President of the Senate and Acting Vice President of the United States. In 1860, the county was the first to have a rail connection to the St. Joseph & Atchison Railroad , which meant a boom in trade for the city and the county.
