The county is located in northwest Missouri in the northern suburbs of Kansas City at the confluence of the Platte River into the Missouri River , which delimits the county to southwest Kansas . Platte County covers an area of 1,106 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

Platte County was formed in 1838 on land acquired in the Platte Purchase . It was named after the Platte River .

As of the 2010 census , Platte County had 89,322 people in 34,684 households. The population density was 82.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.49 people lived in each of the 34,684 households.
