The county is located in east central Missouri on the south bank of the Missouri River . It covers an area of 1363 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Gasconade County:

history
Gasconade County was formed on November 25, 1820 from parts of Franklin County. It was named after the Gasconade River , which in turn was named by the first French settlers here after their old home in southwest France , Gascon .
Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).
