The double angler fish ( Diceratiidae) are a family of the deep sea angler fish (Ceratioidei). They live in tropical and subtropical areas of the Atlantic and the western Indo-Pacific over the continental slopes.

features

In addition to the illicium (angel), the females have a second isolated fin ray that carries a luminous organ . The dorsal fin has five to seven soft rays, the anal fin has four.

Double anglers show a clear sexual dimorphism , in which the male as dwarf male is significantly smaller than the female. After the metamorphosis from the fish larva into the adult animal, the male begins to look for a female. If it has reached one, it bites itself firmly, the jaws of the male then recede and the skin of both animals grows together, as do the blood vessels. Except for the gills, all organ systems are reduced and the nutrition is then only via the bloodstream of the female.

species

There are two genera with a total of seven species .
