The Howard County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Missouri . In 2010 , the county had 10,144 people and a population density of 8.4 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Fayette , named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the colonist side and played an important role in the French Revolution .

On June 7, 1804, Lewis and Clark reached the area of the later county as part of the well-known Lewis and Clark expedition , on the way from the Rocky Mountains towards the Pacific, and stayed here for the night.
The first settlers in the area built three forts to defend themselves against Native American people: Fort Cooper , Fort Hempstead, and Fort Kincaid . Fort Cooper was about three kilometers southwest of Boone's Lick , Fort Kincaid was to the southeast, about 15 km away, about 2 km north of today's Boonville Railroad Bridge, and Fort Kincaid was about one kilometer north of Fort Kincade.
Howard County was formed on January 13, 1816 as the ninth county from parts of St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. It was named after Benjamin Howard (1760-1814), the first governor of the newly named Missouri Territory in 1812 , from which, among other things, the state of Missouri emerged. From the then approximately 22,000 square miles county went u. a. Counties Adair, Boone, Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clay, Clinton, Cole, Cooper, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Henry, Johnson, Lafayette, Linn, Livingston, Macon, Mercer, Moniteau, Morgan, Pettis, Putnam, Randolph, Ray, Saline, Sullivan, and Worth Counties. Parts of the neighboring counties in Iowa also came from Howard County.
25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Howard County had 10,144 people in 3,856 households. The population density was 8.4 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.35 people lived in 3856 households.
The racial the population was composed of 91.9 percent white, 5.4 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.4 percent of the population.
21.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years or older. 50.4 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 42,067 USD . The per capita income was $ 21,829. 15.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
