Benjamin Howard (* 1760 in Lexington , Colony of Virginia , † September 18, 1814 in St. Louis , Missouri Territory ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) and territorial governor in the Louisiana Territory .

Early years and advancement

Howard, born in what is now Kentucky , attended William and Mary College until 1797 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began practicing law in Lexington. In 1800 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives. Between March 4, 1807 and April 10, 1810, he represented his state in the US House of Representatives .

In Louisiana Territory and serving in the Army

In 1810, he was named governor of the Louisiana Territory, which was renamed Missouri Territory in 1812 . When the War of 1812 broke out , Howard resigned to join the army. There he received the rank of brigadier general. He was involved in battles with hostile Indians in Illinois . Howard fell ill on the way back to St. Louis. He died as a result of this illness on September 18, 1814 in St. Louis.

According to him, Howard County named in Missouri.
