Warner Lewis Underwood (born August 7, 1808 in Goochland County , Virginia , †  March 12, 1872 in Bowling Green , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Warner Underwood was the younger brother of Joseph R. Underwood (1791–1876), who between 1835 and 1853 represented the state of Kentucky in both chambers of Congress . He attended the public schools in his home country. He came to Kentucky in 1825. He then studied until 1829 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in Bowling Green in this profession.

In 1834 Warner Underwood moved to Texas, which was then still in Mexico . There he became attorney general for the eastern part of this state after Texas independence. In 1840 he returned to Bowling Green, where he also began a political career and initially joined the American Party . In 1848 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives; between 1849 and 1853 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional election of 1854 Underwood was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Francis Bristow on March 4, 1855 . After his re-election in 1856, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1859. These were shaped by the tensions in the run-up to the civil war .

In 1858 Underwood declined to run again. Between 1862 and 1864 he was American consul in Scotland's Glasgow . After returning to the United States, he practiced as a lawyer in San Francisco . In 1866 he returned to Kentucky, where he also worked as a lawyer. Warner Underwood died on March 12, 1872 near Bowling Green; he was buried there.
