Garnett Duncan

William Garnett Duncan (born March 2, 1800 in Louisville , Kentucky , †  May 25, 1875 there ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Garnett Duncan studied at Yale College until 1821 . After a subsequent law degree at the same school and his admission as a lawyer in 1822, he began to work in Louisville in this profession. In the 1840s he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional election of 1846 Duncan was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded William Thomasson on March 4, 1847 . Since he was no longer running in 1848, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1849 . During this time the Mexican-American War ended . Duncan was a member of the Naval Committee.

In 1850 he moved to New Orleans , Louisiana , where he practiced as a lawyer. In 1860 he retired. He then went on a few trips to Europe. At that time he also lived in the French capital Paris for a few years . Only in the year of his death in 1875 did he return to Louisville because of his poor health. He died there on May 25, 1875.
