William B. Read

William Brown Read (born December 14, 1817 in Hardin County , Kentucky , †  August 5, 1880 in Hodgenville , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Read first attended elementary schools. After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law in 1849, he began to work in this profession in Hodgenville. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1860 he was a delegate to both Democratic National Conventions in Charleston and Baltimore . In 1864 he also took part in the Federal Democratic Party Congress in Chicago . Between 1857 and 1865 he was a member of the Kentucky Senate .

In 1863, Read unsuccessfully ran for the post of lieutenant governor of his state. Between 1867 and 1869 he was an MP in the Kentucky House of Representatives . In the congressional elections of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded J. Proctor Knott on March 4, 1871 . After a re-election in 1872, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

For the election of 1874, William Read was no longer nominated by his party for another term. As a result, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on August 5, 1880 in his hometown of Hodgenville.
