Edward Crossland (born June 30, 1827 in Hickman County , Kentucky , †  September 11, 1881 in Mayfield , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Crossland attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1852, he began to work in Clinton in this profession. In 1851 and 1852 he served as sheriff chief of police in Hickman County. Politically, Crossland became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1857 to 1858 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . As a Confederate supporter , he served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War . He took part in several battles and rose from captain to colonel between 1861 and 1865.

Between 1867 and 1870, Crossland was a judge on the Court of Appeals for Kentucky First District Court. In the congressional election of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Lawrence S. Trimble on March 4, 1871 . After a re-election in 1872, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Crossland initially practiced as a lawyer again. In August 1880, he was appointed a judge in the Kentucky First Judicial District. He held this office until his death on September 11, 1881.
