Joseph Swagar Sherley (born November 28, 1871 in Louisville , Kentucky , †  February 13, 1941 there ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1919 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Swagar Sherley attended his homeland public schools including Louisville High School , which he graduated in 1889. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia and his admission as a lawyer in 1891, he began to work in Louisville in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1902 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Harvey Samuel Irwin on March 4, 1903 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1919 . From 1917 to 1919 he was chairman of the budget committee. During his tenure in the House of Representatives, the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified in 1913 . Since 1917, the year America entered the war, the events of World War I also shaped the work of Congress.

In the 1918 election, Sherley was defeated by Republican Charles F. Ogden . From 1919 to 1920 he was department head of the federal railway administration. There he was responsible for finances. He then practiced as a lawyer in the federal capital Washington. He died on February 13, 1941 while visiting Louisville, his birthplace; he was buried there.
