James Johnson (politician, 1774)

James Johnson (born January 1, 1774 in Orange County , Colony of Virginia , † August 13, 1826 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . He was the brother of Richard Mentor Johnson and John Telemachus Johnson and the uncle of Robert Ward Johnson .

Career

James Johnson moved with his father to Kentucky in 1779 , where he later pursued preparatory studies. Then he decided to embark on a political career. He ran for a seat in the Kentucky Senate in 1808 , where he served after a successful election. He also served as a lieutenant colonel in the US Army during the British-American War of 1812 . After the war he worked as a contractor for supplies for the troops in the western border region between 1819 and 1820. He was also the presidential elector for James Monroe and Daniel D. Tompkins in 1820 . He was later elected as a supporter of Andrew Jackson in the 19th US Congress , where he remained from March 4, 1825 until his death on August 3, 1826. He was buried in the family cemetery in Great Crossings .
