Joe B. Bates

Joseph Bengal "Joe" Bates (born October 29, 1893 in Republican , Kentucky , †  September 10, 1965 in Ashland , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1938 and 1953 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joe Bates attended the public schools in his home country and the Mountain Training School in Hindman . He then studied until 1916 at the Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in Richmond . He also studied law. While still a student, he taught between 1912 and 1915 in Knott County as a teacher. From 1917 to 1919 he was the head of the high school in Raceland . He then served as a county clerk in Greenup County between 1922 and 1938 .

Politically, Bates joined the Democratic Party . After the resignation of MP Fred M. Vinson , he was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the eighth seat of Kentucky , where he took up his new mandate on June 4, 1938. Since he was confirmed in each of the seven subsequent regular congressional elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1953 . During this time the Second World War and its aftermath fell.

In 1952, Bates was not nominated for re-election by his party. In 1956 he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for the US Senate elections . After leaving the US House of Representatives, he worked as a lawyer. He died in Ashland on September 10, 1965 and was buried in Flatwoods .
