Charles S. Morehead
Charles Slaughter Morehead (born July 7, 1802 in Bardstown , Nelson County , Kentucky , † December 21, 1868 in Greenville , Mississippi ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Kentucky.
Education and political advancement
Charles Morehead studied law at Transylvania University until 1822 and then practiced as a lawyer. He has also been politically active since 1828, the year he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives . With a few interruptions, he stayed there until 1853 and was also temporarily chairman of the house ( speaker ). One of the interruptions was from 1847 to 1851, when he was a member of the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC .
Kentucky governor
In 1855, Morehead was nominated by the American Party as a candidate for governor. He won the election with 51.6% of the vote against the Democrat Beverly L. Clarke , who only got 48.4%. During his tenure (1855 to 1859) the Kentucky State Agricultural Society was founded. The judiciary was reformed by improving and expanding the state penal institution. At the same time, Transylvania University was reorganized. A faculty for the training of lecturers was attached to it. The governor improved control of the currency and banks. The first annual national exhibition was prepared in its time. In addition, he improved the state's infrastructure and, above all, had the railway network expanded.
Another résumé
After retiring from office, he practiced law in Louisville . In 1861 he took part in the failed peace conference in Washington that was supposed to prevent the civil war . Morehead was officially neutral in the national conflict, but sympathized with the South . He criticized the administration of Abraham Lincoln and was imprisoned for four months in September 1861 for disloyalty.
After his release, he left the country and traveled to Canada and Europe. He only returned to the USA after the end of the war. He now lived on a plantation near Greenville (Mississippi), where he died in December 1868. Morehead was married twice and had a total of five children.
