John McConnell Rice

John McConnell Rice (born February 19, 1831 in Prestonsburg , Floyd County , Kentucky , †  September 18, 1895 in Louisa , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1873 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Rice received only a limited elementary education. After a subsequent law degree at Louisville Law School and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to work in Pikeville in this profession. In 1854 he became a school councilor in Pike County . Two years later, in 1856, he was working as a public prosecutor in the same district.

Politically, Rice was a member of the Democratic Party . He was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1858 and 1861 . From 1860 he lived in Louisa. In the congressional elections of 1868 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Samuel McKee on March 4, 1869 . After re-election in 1870, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1873 .

In 1872, John Rice renounced another candidacy for the US House of Representatives. In the following years he practiced as a lawyer in Louisa. In 1883 he was appointed a judge at the Lawrence County Criminal Court. He held this office until his death on September 18, 1895 in Louisa.
