William N. Sweeney

William Northcut Sweeney (born May 5, 1832 in Liberty , Casey County , Kentucky , †  April 21, 1895 in Owensboro , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Sweeney attended his home public schools and Bethany College in what is now West Virginia . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to practice in Liberty in this profession. From 1854 to 1858, Sweeney was a Daviess County prosecutor . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1860 he was one of their electorates who voted for Stephen A. Douglas in the presidential election .

In the congressional election of 1868 Sweeney was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Samuel McKee on March 4, 1869 . In 1870 he was set up by his party for a further legislative period in Congress ; however, he declined this nomination. Therefore, until March 3, 1871, he could only serve one term in the US House of Representatives. After his tenure in Congress ended, he worked as a lawyer in Owensboro. He died there on April 21, 1895.
