Anthony New

Anthony New (* 1747 in Gloucester County , Colony of Virginia , †  March 2, 1833 in Elkton , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1823 he repeatedly represented the states of Virginia and Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date and place of birth of Anthony New are unknown. After primary school he studied law and then worked as a lawyer. During the War of Independence he was a colonel in the Continental Army . After the war, he began a political career in Virginia. He was a supporter of Thomas Jefferson and became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by him .

In the congressional elections of 1792 he was elected to the then newly established 16th  constituency of Virginia in the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia . There he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1793. He was confirmed in each of the following years. So he could represent his district in Congress until March 3, 1803 . Between 1803 and 1805 he represented the eleventh district of his state there. During his tenure as MP for Virginia, the American government and Congress moved to the new federal capital Washington, DC in 1800. At that time, the eleventh and twelfth amendments were ratified. In 1803, President Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase greatly expanded American territory to the west.

After moving to Elkton, Kentucky, he continued his political career in his new home. In the congressional elections of 1810 he was re-elected to Congress for the first district of Kentucky to succeed Matthew Lyon . He represented this district for a legislative period between March 4, 1811 and March 3, 1813. During this time, the British-American War began . Between March 4, 1817 and March 3, 1819, and again from March 4, 1821 to March 3, 1823, New sat for the fifth district of Kentucky in Congress.

After his final resignation from parliament, Anthony New retired to his estate "Dunheath" near Elkton in Todd County , where he worked in agriculture. He died there on March 2, 1833.
