Gloucester County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 34,780 people and a population density of 62 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Gloucester .
geography
Gloucester County is located in eastern Virginia, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 746 square kilometers, of which 185 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Middlesex County , Mathews County , York County , James City County, and King and Queen Counties .
history
It was formed in 1651 from parts of York County. It was named after Henry, Duke of Gloucester , the third son of Charles I , King of England, Scotland and Ireland and his wife Henrietta Maria of France , daughter of the French King Henry IV and Maria de 'Medici .

According to the 2000 census , Gloucester County had 34,780 people in 13,127 households and 9,884 families. The population density was 62 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.68 percent white, 10.31 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.69 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.45 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,127 households, 35.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, 24.7 percent were non-families, 20.3 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,421 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,426. Males had a median income of $ 35,838 versus $ 24,325 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,990. 6.8 percent of families and 7.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 9.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences is located in Gloucester , one of the largest marine research institutes in the United States, primarily concerned with issues relating to coastal waters and estuaries. In addition to its function as a public research institute, the institute operates the School of Marine Sciences together with the College of William and Mary as a graduate school offering both Masters and PhD programs.
