Dinwiddie County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 24,533 residents and a population density of 19 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Dinwiddie .

Dinwiddie County is located in central southeast Virginia, about 60 km south of North Carolina and covers an area of 1,313 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Chesterfield County , Prince George County , Sussex County , Greensville County , Brunswick County , Nottoway County, and Amelia Counties .
history
It was formed on May 1, 1752 from parts of Prince George County. It was named after Robert Dinwiddie , a lieutenant governor . Towards the end of the American Civil War , the Battle of Five Forks took place here on April 1, 1865 .

According to the 2000 United States Census , Dinwiddie County had 24,533 people in 9,107 households and 6,720 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.55 percent white, 33.66 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,107 households, 32.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.8 percent were married couples living together, 13.9 percent were single mothers, 26.2 percent were non-families, 22.2 percent were single households and 8.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,582 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,961. Males had a median income of $ 32,860 versus $ 24,346 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,122. 6.6 percent of families and 9.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 11.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
