Dinwiddie County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 24,533 residents and a population density of 19 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Dinwiddie .

Dinwiddie County is located in central southeast Virginia, about 60 km south of North Carolina and covers an area of ​​1,313 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Chesterfield County , Prince George County , Sussex County , Greensville County , Brunswick County , Nottoway County, and Amelia Counties .

history

It was formed on May 1, 1752 from parts of Prince George County. It was named after Robert Dinwiddie , a lieutenant governor . Towards the end of the American Civil War , the Battle of Five Forks took place here on April 1, 1865 .

According to the 2000 United States Census , Dinwiddie County had 24,533 people in 9,107 households and 6,720 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.55 percent white, 33.66 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
