Henry County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 57,930 people and a population density of 58 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Collinsville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Henry County is located in southwest Virginia, borders North Carolina to the south and has an area of 996 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. Henry County is divided into seven counties: Blackberry, Collinsville, Horsepasture, Iriswood, Reed Creek, and Ridgeway. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pittsylvania County , Patrick County, and Franklin County .

It was formed in 1777 from parts of Pittsylvania County. First it was called Patrick Henry County, named after the first governor of Virginia after independence, Patrick Henry . In 1790 Patrick Henry County was divided into a western part (Patrick County) and an eastern part (Henry County).

Henry County's population was 57,930 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 437 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 23,910 households and 16,952 families. The population density was 58 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.43 percent white, 22.66 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.41 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.46 percent of the population.
Of the 23,910 households, 28.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.2 percent were single mothers, 29.1 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent were single households, and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,816 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,649. Males had a median income of $ 26,660 versus $ 20,766 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,110. 8.8 percent of families and 11.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. This included 15.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.6 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
