Dickenson County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States and is Virginia's youngest county. At the 2000 census , the county had 16,395 people and a population density of 19 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Clintwood . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Dickenson County is located almost in the far west of Virginia, borders Kentucky to the north and has an area of 864 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Buchanan County , Russell County, and Wise County .
history
It was formed in 1880 from parts of Buchanan County, Russell County, and Wise County. It was named after the political leader William J. Dickinson .

According to the 2000 United States Census , Dickenson County had 16,395 people in 6,732 households and 4,887 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.96 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.45 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.43 percent of the population.
Of the 6,732 households, 30.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 25.3 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 23,431 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,986. Males had a median income of $ 27,281 versus $ 17,695 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,822. 16.9 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 26.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 and 17.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
