Powhatan County is located just east of the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of ​​680 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Goochland County , Chesterfield County , Amelia County, and Cumberland County .

history

It was formed in 1777 from parts of Cumberland County and Chesterfield County. It was named after the chief Powhatan , the father of Pocahontas .

Powhatan County's population was 22,377 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 2479 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7258 households and 5900 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.50 percent white, 16.91 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.84 percent were from two or more races.
