Prince Edward County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 19,720 residents and a population density of 22 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Farmville .

Prince Edward County is located slightly southeast of the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of 916 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Cumberland County , Amelia County , Nottoway County , Lunenburg County , Charlotte County , Appomattox County, and Buckingham County .

According to the 2000 census , Prince Edward County's population was 19,720. Of these, 3753 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6561 households and 4271 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.17 percent white, 35.82 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.55 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.95 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.94 percent of the population.
Of the 6,561 households, 29.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 46.5 percent were married couples living together, 14.9 percent were single mothers, 34.9 percent were non-families, 28.9 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
For the entire county, the population was made up of 20.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 23.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 19.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,301 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,509. Males had a median income of $ 29,487 versus $ 21,659 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,510. 14.6 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 24.4 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
